The story follows Akane, a girl with no self-confidence. On the day before her birthday, she meets a mysterious alchemist Hippocrates and their student Pipo, who both tell her they're on a mission to save the world. Together, they set out from the basement for "Wonderland," and Akane finds herself labelled Wonderland's savior.

A movie adaptation of the 1981 children's book Chikashitsu kara no Fushigi na Tabi.

A wonderful and mysterious birthday adventure, one that you will never forget. Beyond the basement door in Aunt Chi’s antique shop lies a world beyond your wildest imagination...

Akane Uesugi is a shy 6th grader who has trouble telling other people how she feels.

The day before her birthday, her mother, Midori, sends her on an errand: to go get her birthday present from her free-spirited Aunt Chi’s antique shop. But a strange man named Hippocrates the Alchemist, who calls her the “Green Goddess”, together with Pipo the fairy, takes her on a journey to “The World Beyond” from a door in the basement.
There, the water has dried up and the trees are losing their color. Can she save it with the help of her free-spirited Aunt Chi, the stern Hippocrates, and his apprentice Pipo?

Hara announced in 2017 that her next job would be a "female adventure fantasy". At the time, he debuted a teaser image.

Hara's latest work, Sarusuberi: Miss Hokusai, premiered in May 2015. The film won the Jury Prize at Annecy in June 2015. Hara also won the Asiagraph 2015 Tsumugi Prize in recognition of individuals who have made valuable contributions to the art digital.

Hara worked for years on the television anime series Crayon Shin-chan before drawing critical attention to films like Crayon Shin-chan: Arashi the Yobu Appare! Sengoku Daikassen (Crayon Shin-chan; Brilliant! The Great Battle of the Warring States) and Summer Days with Coo. He won a Special Mention of Jury's Special Distinction and the Audience Award for Colorful 2011. Since then he has made his first live-action film, a biography in 2013 about Japanese filmmaker Keisuke Kinoshita.
