The story begins on January 29, 2030 in Tokyo, where a strange high frequency resonance and a red fog are covering the city. Everyone who hears the sound, human and animal, loses consciousness. Tokyo closes completely believing that the fog is a kind of new virus that causes an epidemic, but six days after the incident, people wake up as if it had not happened. Little by little sections of Tokyo are opening, but since that fact, strange things begin to happen to those involved. The younger ones begin to discover that they have new powers thanks to their blood, and they will be known as "carriers of the blood of wisdom". Attracted by something unknown, they will meet and face fate sacrificing their own lives.

Developed by Think Garage, Square Enix launched the first game of the franchise in June 2008, followed by a sequel in October 2009 and already in July 2011 the updated version of this, Lord of Vermilion Re: 2. Lord of Vermilion III arrived in August 2013 and its fourth and final installment to date, Lord of Vermilion IV, was launched in the summer of 2017.
